AWS Charity Jobs are the retained consultancy for this vacancy.

Worldwide Cancer Research is the UK charity that will end cancer by starting new cancer cures around the globe. We are a small, but mighty, team, united by a shared purpose – to end the suffering and death caused by cancer. That’s why every role at Worldwide Cancer Research is crucial, none more so than the Head of Fundraising. Leading a team of first-class fundraisers, this is a career defining opportunity to fund cancer research on a global scale, tackling fundraising challenges with a curious mind and entrepreneurial spirit. I am delighted that you are considering becoming a Curestarter by applying for this role and starting the cancer cures of the future.

Laura McLachlan
Director of Marketing & Fundraising

We start new cancer cures

The research journey is a long one and we sit at the very beginning.  We fund fresh new cancer research ideas with the aim of making breakthrough discoveries that will lead to future cancer cures.

We have a global outlook

We know the best ideas in cancer research won’t be limited to one country, they could come from any scientist in the world.  We’ve backed scientists across 35 different countries since we were founded 40 years ago.

We fund research into all cancers

There are over 200 types of cancer, and no magic bullet will cure them all. To be truly open to the best, most innovative ideas, we don’t focus on a particular cancer type.  In fact, much of the research we fund could ultimately help treat or prevent many types of cancer.

And we’re small but mighty

Our Edinburgh-based team of just 45 people punches well above its weight.  Since its inception the charity has funded a total of 2000 projects and £200M of cancer research worldwide.  Our ambition is to quadruple research funding over the next decade so that we can kickstart 100 new ideas a year, every year.

The charity has weathered the pandemic well, successfully stabilizing income throughout and even growing charitable activity in 2021.  This means we are well positioned for further growth and are now looking to make two key appointments towards this.

Reporting to and working closely with the Director of Marketing and Fundraising, the Head of Fundraising is responsible for leading our income growth strategy. This role is responsible for achieving strategic and sustainable net income to fulfil the charity’s overarching purpose – to end cancer by starting new cancer cures worldwide. The Head of Fundraising will seek income growth through innovation and diversification of our fundraising portfolio. A key leadership role, approx. 50% of role focused on leadership of fundraising team and strategy implementation, 30% strategy development and 20% to various cross-organisational goals/projects.
